A Bit About My Colorful Life
Hey friend! I’m Zareth Halaby, also known by the nickname “Z.” I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and I have a BFA in Illustration from California State University Long Beach. In 2020, I discovered my love for making children’s illustrations after working as a part time Elementary School Art Teacher. I loved working with kids, and I also love art, so why not make art FOR kids? It was then that I shifted from an impressionistic art style to something more cute and bubbly. Working with grade school children also taught me a lot about what they want to see in the media as well as what really resonates with them. And what do kids really love? Science!
I can relate to this, because when I was a little girl, I wanted to be a scientist. One year I wanted to be a geologist, the next a biologist, the next a zoologist. I went through every science until I eventually landed on... artist! But why not work with both? As a scientific illustrator, I get to learn about many sciences, and at the same time pursue my passion of illustrating for kids. I used to read book after book about various sciences (I still do!) and I want to pass on my excitement for science to the next generation, because those fun illustrated science books brought me so much joy and curiosity. So now, you can find me illustrating on subjects like astronomy, marine biology, archeology, and so much more! Not only are the illustrations cute, but they will educate children about the world and beyond.
Work Experience
Cures of Colors
(Illustrator)
June 2021- March 2022
Cures of Colors is a children's coloring book company that focuses on subjects that are not normally taught to children. Some topics examples include: Black Lives Matter, Mental Health, LGBT issues, and so on. I had the pleasure of being an illustrator on their Mental Health coloring book, which is now available to purchase on their website! As an Illustrator, I was in charge of designing my own pages (including the cover). giving feedback to others, and overall making the work look professional. In addition, I designed a few single coloring sheet for the holidays and I just finsihed up my second coloring book with them.
Color Me Mine
(Studio Assistant)
Nov. 2019 - July 2023
Color Me Mine is a painting studio where people of all ages come in to paint ceramics that will last them a lifetime. As a staff member, I do a little bit of everything; including glazing, loading items into the kiln, cleaning, providing excellent customer service and hosting parties. This job was truly a perfect side job for me because I am very passionate about art and helping others spark their creativity.
Kid's Art Teacher
Jan 2020 - present
I’ve always loved working with children, so I am so grateful that I was given the chance to become a part time art teacher in various Long Beach Elementary Schools. As an instructor, I had to maintain a class full of children from kinder to 5th grade, and ensure that they are all safe, and of course also having fun! Every week I had a new assignment and I showed the students how to do it step by step, while providing them with an array of media they can use to color/create with!
Pearson
(Scientific Illustrator)
Aug 2023 - present
After college, I was given the incredible opportunity to work as a Freelance Scientific Illustrator for the educational company Pearson. I specifically work for Pearson's tutoring branch, which means I create diagrams, charts, graphs, for their workbooks and tutoring videos. I work with a team of tutors from the Biology, Chemistry, Math and Psychology department. They communicate to me an image they want for their lessons, and I am in charge of bringing their ideas and visions to life. In addition to this, I occasionally also create images for Pearson's tutoring website, called Pearson+ Channels
